What gets checked
A walkthrough moves fast and follows a predictable path. Kitchen appliances first, then bathrooms, then floors, then walls and windows. The inspector looks for anything that costs money to fix or clean after you leave.

- Every cabinet and closet, inside and on top
- Shower glass, grout, and drain

Book it after the movers, not before
The most common mistake is scheduling the cleaning while furniture is still in the apartment. Everything the inspector cares about sits behind or under something.
Give yourself a buffer day between the move and the walkthrough if the lease allows. Movers run late, and a crew arriving to a half-empty apartment will either reschedule or do a partial job you still pay full price for.
What cleaning does not cover
Cleaning is not repair. Nail holes, paint touch-ups, damaged flooring, and broken fixtures are separate work, and a cleaning crew will leave them as found. If your lease requires the walls patched, arrange that before the cleaning.
Most cleaners will also not haul away furniture or large volumes of trash. New York buildings have specific rules about bulk disposal and many charge for violations, so confirm what your provider will remove.

No. Cleaning addresses cleanliness. Deposits also get withheld for damage, unpaid rent, and lease violations. A thorough cleaning removes the easiest and most common justification, not all of them.

Should I clean before or after the movers come?
